Culinary Digest: Brasserie La Jaloa, Brussels

BRUSSELS 066

I had very high expectations for Jaloa Brasserie, having looked at the extensive menu in the hours preceding our visit there. I’m not, however, sure whether my travel companion and I went there on one of their off nights, or whether our previous night out-of-this-world Tram Dining Experience had made us a bit pickier, but our experience at the brasserie was decidedly lackluster.

Culinary Digest: Le Selecto, Brussels

A Le Selecto lamb dish (accompanied by green beans and mashed potatoes).

Le Selecto defines its own concept as “bistronomie”, meaning a high quality version of the traditional (French) bistro-cuisine in an informal setting. I totally agree. It occupies a rather simple & modern room (a few terrace tables in the summer) in a pleasant part of Brussels. The service is friendly. The attractive menu changes on a monthly basis. The chef, who ran a Michelin-starred restaurant a few years ago, believes in quality products, which he prepares perfectly in a rather traditional French style, which can be slightly rich sometimes, but is always very tasty.

Culinary Digest: Fishmonger, Rosebank, Johannesburg

Our party of six had already been turned down at two other restaurants in the popular Firs Piazza in Rosebank (remember to always make reservations on a Saturday night here) when we were welcomed heartily to Fishmonger. Although it is a seafood restaurant, there are several other options, including salads and steaks and, to my great surprise, ostrich fillet. I have never had ostrich so it I quickly settle on it, accompanied by a local variant of spinach called morogo and blackberry coulis.

What the experts say Steve Hart, MD of Helsinki-based The Travel Experience: After opening in the summer of 2007, A21 Cocktail Lounge quickly established itself as an elite amongst the Finnish bar scene.   Trendy interiors with intimate and varied coloured lighting, combined with  an astonishing range of drinks, including some stand-out unique Finnish concoctions.   Even [...]

Culinary Digest: Juuri, Helsinki, Finland

I visit Juuri, which is located on a little side street in downtown Helsinki ,on a Friday night not really sure what to expect. I have been told to anticipate small samples of Finnish cuisine but this being my first time in the country, and Finnish food not being that internationally renown, I am none the wiser. It turns out the restaurant is a small, quirky affair but totally worth the hour and a half I spent there.
