Location: Very idealy situated on London’s Hyde Park Corner and in close proximity to Knightsbridge and its plethora of high end stores, the eponymous Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace – which is a mere ten minutes walk away (along Green Park no less) and Piccadilly.
Rooms: At 36 rooms and suites spread over seven floors – with 29 of them being suites – this is the hotel for those who prefer their hotels on an intimate scale. But if you are into your grand hotels, don’t let the size of this one deter you: It packs quite a lot of grandeur into its small stature.
Other facilities and services: All of the hotels public spaces are on the ground floor. These include the Jazz Lounge , a live music performance space, the Oval Restaurant – which specialises in Italian cuisine, the 1920s-ish Crystal Bar, both an indoors cigar lounge and two outdoor cigar terraces and the largest humidor in Europe. Other services include use of a complimentary Rolls-‐Royce drop-off service for local journeys within 1.5 miles of the hotel, a 24-hour butler service which includes unpacking , steaming/pressing for those who may need that and Samsung tablets in every room.
Tripadvisor rating: Overwhelmingly good, with 128 Excellent or Very Good rating out of 138 total reviews.
The last word: Normally, I’m not the biggest fan of intimate boutique hotels. I find them claustrophobic and inadvertently end up feeling resentful of the fact that there are people I am not very familiar with not only on a first-name basis with me but who also know all of my going outs and coming ins for a few days of my life. (Yes, I do have trust issues…) This is most certainly not the case at The Wellesley, where I feel they’ve managed to marry the grandeur and boutique aspects very successfully. Service in all of their public spaces is also attentive yet non-intrusive.
The lowdown: Rates at The Wellesley start from £550 for a deluxe queen room and go all the way to £11,500 for the penthouse suite. These can be booked by contacting the hotel on +44 2072 353 535 or firstname.lastname@example.org
