Hotel Review: Clarion Hotel & Congress Trondheim

Clarion Trondheim Main

Location: By Trondheim’s Brattørkaia, which is Norway’s third largest city’s main harbour. Hurtigruten and other commuter boats regularly set sail from here. The hotel is not centrally located but is within walking distance of Trondheim’s main train station and most of the city’s attractions.

Rooms: This is a convention/conference hotel, and one of Norway’s largest at that. It should therefore come as a surprise to no one that it skews on the slightly impersonal side with its 400 rooms. The hotel’s best floor – in terms of room categories – is the 8th floor which is where many of the suites are located. Bigger is not always better however, and in this case one might even say it’s worse. The floor is directly underneath the hotel’s rooftop Astrum Grill and Raw Bar, which can get very noisy some nights. Light sleepers like myself should therefore choose accordingly. Staff are kind and professional and very helpful in finding alternative rooms should one find that the one they have been allocated does not meet with their standards.

Other facilities: The aforementioned Astrum Grill & Raw Bar which specialises in a mish mash of Nordic, American and Asian cuisine, meeting rooms and conference rooms and free wifi throughout the hotel. The hotel’s breakfast offering is quite varied expansive, an aspect which most of the guests I saw during my stay there seemed to enjoy immensely. Sadly the hotel does not have its own training facilities but hotel guests have access to the nearby 3T Pirbadet training center, which also has swimming facilities.

Clarion Hotel Trondheim Munkholmen View

Standout feature: Some rooms have fantastic views over Trondheim fjord, including but not limited to the harbour and the history-rich former monastery-on-an-island Munkholmen. Pro tip: Request a room with a fjord view at check-in.

The lowdown: Prices at the hotel start at NOK 960 and may be booked through Prices subject to seasonal variations and availability.
