Hotel Review: Grand Hôtel, Stockholm – Sweden

Grand Hotel Main

Location: What is over 140 years old, a Grand Old Dame and yet popular with the young crowd and distinguished, knowledgeable nobel laureates alike? The Grand Hôtel Stockholm, that’s what. Occupying prime waterside location on the Blasieholmen peninsula in Central Stockholm, it offers stunning views of the Royal Palace, Gamla Stan (The Old Town) and even the artsy Södermalm if you look hard enough and/or get a room that’s high enough. Within walking distance of many attractions in the city as well as both the high street and exclusive shopping districts.

Rooms: The hotel has 300 rooms, 31 of which are suites of various categories. Luxury Travel Beat stayed in a superior room on the 4th floor with stunning waterfront views, although I would imagine the views (which can be seen below) are infinitely better in the summer months than in the winter.

Other amenities: This is where the hotel truly shines in my opinion. There is the Nordic Spa and Fitness which offered us a warm and welcome respite from the winter freeze when we were there last month. Then there are three restaurants helmed by Michelin-starred chef Mathias Dahlgren – Matsalen (2 stars), Matbaren (1 star) and Matbordet. Sadly Matsalen and Matbordet served their last meals just a few days before Christmas. Hold your weeping horses, however, as Dahlgren is set to open a brand new restaurant concept in the same venue during the first quarter of 2017. In the meantime, the aforementioned Matbaren as well as Verandan -where breakfast is served – and Cadier Bar continue to boldly fly the gastronomic flag at Grand Hotel Stockholm. Other amenities include free wifi, luxurious DUX beds, Acqua di Parma toiletries, and 24 banquet and conference rooms. Fun fact:  The very first Nobel Banquet was hosted here in 1901.

Standout feature: Hands down the Nordic Spa and Fitness Centre. Full disclousre: My views are severely coloured by the extreme snow blizzard conditions we encountered on our long weekend there. Naturally we sought shelter here immediately upon coming back in from exploring the frozen city.
