Cityscape: Rome, Italy

When it comes to Rome, I have both good and bad news to report. I’ll start with the bad: Rome is in crisis. The city whose culture was shaped by Catholicism is in as much flux as the religion itself. Its famous relics of the past are in a state of disrepair, forcing the cash-strapped Italian government to turn to fashion houses for funds to repair their iconic monuments.

“Darling, if I don’t like the reception I already have a sinking feeling. I start thinking, have I made a mistake here? We stayed at a hotel called the Blue Palace in June, in Elounda, Crete. It is the most ugliest building! One of the ugliest buildings I have ever seen. It’s this kind of 1970s concrete block, enormous! Enormous darling, it’s like a prison. I was all, where the hell have I come to? My God!”

I like a good trip but what I love the most is the adventure that a trip can bring. Planning the destination is good, but not the entire trip. Sometimes I like to take off without even booking the hotel. I know…I know. But that is what I like – casual and spontaneous!

I would urge anyone who visits New Zealand to do the drive from Christchurch to Queenstown and then round the West Coast, over Arthur’s Pass and back to Christchurch. Stay in Queenstown for a while as there is heaps to do there. On the North Island the beaches of the Coromandel, Northland and the East Cape are stunning, the sea is incredibly clear and you’re likely to see dolphins and other wildlife. There are some amazing guided walks to do and if you’re a horse rider I recommend trekking in the high country of the South island.

This week’s tripper is Saska Graville, the deputy editor of Red magazine and author of London Style Guide. A true travel junkie and hotel addict, she has never knowingly said no to a weekend away. She loves nothing more than a new check-in – whether it’s a seaside B&B, city crashpad or luxe country house hotel.
